Description:
This advertisement for Edouard Bessarat champagne pictures men and women having champagne with Alfred Leblanc, winner of the Circuit de L’est in Paris in 1910. The advertisers wanted to capitalize on Leblanc’s fame and notoriety to sell their champagne.
The caption on the bottom of the advertisement, ‘La bonne marque’ is a pun meaning ‘its a good brand’ and ‘right on target’.
Elegance, celebration, and dare- devil sophistication, were attitudes that were used to described both champagne and aviation. Aviation was the new found sport of the wealthy high flyers and helped advertise champagne to a fashionable and daring high society.
