Description:
Sea Plane Contest. Organized by the
Automobile Club of France. St.
Malo, Dinard, Jersey, St. Servan,
Parame, St. Lunaire. August 24, 25,
26 -- France - England.
Unusual interest attached to the
Hydro-aeroplane meeting at St.
Malo because of the new types of
machines which had been entered
for it. As expected some of
these machines did not fly, and
some of them did not even put in
an appearance...
The Aeroplane
August 29, 1912
The 1912 Hydro-aeroplane competition
at St. Malo was one of the first
meetings of its kind to be held in
France. The machines were normal
airplanes with floats replacing the
wheels, and since seaplanes were
new, the engineers were still trying
to understand how many floats were
necessary and where they should be
placed to get the best results on
the water. The bad weather during
the weekend helped to showcase the
more seaworthy and eliminate the
weaker machines. Of the eleven
aircraft registered for the contest,
six qualified on the first day and
only four finished the entire
competition. The last of the three
events held here was a roundtrip
flight of 120 miles between St. Malo
and the British Island of Jersey.
