Flying Machine Works. Gustave Otto, Munich. Schleissheimerstrasse 135, telephone 31109

This early advertisement for the Gustave Otto Flying Machine Works of Munich, Germany shows a Farman-type biplane, the first plane manufactured by the Otto firm in 1911. From 1911 through the first World War, the Otto factory was the largest aircraft manufacturer in southern Germany and the sole supplier of airplanes to the Bavarian army. The company later merged to form the Bavarian Motor Works (BMW).

The poster is by Ludgwig Hohlwein, a well known German artist who began to design posters in 1906. It is characteristic of Hohlwein’s early work which broke from the prevailing Art Nouveau style by using intense colors and flat, bold patterns to achieve a strong graphic impact. Hohlwein was an important and successful designer who later made propaganda posters for the Nazi Party, employing techniques developed by artists at the Bauhaus, whose own work, ironically, was banned by Hohlwein’s employers.
