Description:
This scene on the cover of Literary Digest on January 19, 1918 depicts an American pilot prepared to fire his synchronized machine gun at a German pilot. The German fighter pilot is raising both arms in the air, surrendering to the American. This illustration is a classic depiction of the German defeat and surrender which ended World War I.
Literary Digest, not unlike today’s Reader’s Digest, featured fictional stories and articles that addressed public interest and opinion such as "Topics of the Day", "The Nation and the War", and "War-Time Food".
The magazine also reported on current events during the war such as "How The Germans Destroy and Collect Art", and "The Temple of World Peace In The Hands of President Wilson."
