Description:
June 9 - 10 at Vincennes. World
Trophy of Aerial Acrobatics.
Organized by Air Propaganda and the
journal Le Petit Parisien.
The best aerial stuntmen from 10
Countries participated in the "Coupe
Mondiale," the first International
Aerobatic World Cup Championship
held at the Vincennes Airfield near
Paris in June 1934. Aerobatic meets
were very popular sporting events
across Europe and the U.S. in the
1920’s and 30’s, and this was the
first time that these meets were
organized into a championship event
based on the results of national
championship tests.
The 1934 World Cup competition was
held over two days. On the first
day each pilot had to perform a
predetermined set of maneuvers
within an eight minute period. On
the second day, each aviator had to
perform his own program of loops,
twists, flips, and other moves
within a ten minute period. In
between the competition flights, a
variety of acts kept the crowd
entertained, including formation
flights by an Italian military
squadron, demonstrations of
different types of commercial
aircraft, parachute jumps, and
stunts performed on an aerial flying
trapeze.
The top competitors at this meet
were two men who dominated the
aerobatic meets across Europe during
this period, Gerhard Fieseler of
Germany and Michel Detroyat of
France. Both pilots were extremely
popular in their own countries and
both attracted large crowds whenever
they performed.
