Title: Aviation Populaire
Artist: Georges Villa
Year of Publication: 1936
Publisher:
Language: French
Size:
Index Number: 00275

Description:

The Chamber of Commerce sponsored this poster in an attempt to actively solicit French youth to become aviators.  The caption on the poster reads:  “Follow French youths who want to conquer the skies in aviation.”

A French boy gestures toward airplanes here depicted emanating as birds in the sky transforming themselves into airplanes.  At the center of the composition Villa, the illustrator, superimposes the country of France in orange.  In a demonstration of expert craftsmanship, Villa limits the color scheme to a palate of blues, greys, and orange to emphasize the strong diagonal composition at the heart of his dramatic poster design.

The poster expresses similarities to Geo Ham’s “Aviation Populaire”, a widely advertised theme in the 1930’s.  George Villa and Geo Ham were highly popular and successful aviation illustrators.
