In the foreground a primeval figure of a blacksmith, whose trade represents industry and commerce, gestures to marvels in the sky.

The first international exposition took place in the Grand Palais September 25th, through October 8th , 1909. Esnault Pelterie and Andre Granet the Commissaire General for international aviation directed the exposition. The engineer and artist, Maurice Mallet, displayed his models and drawings of spherical balloons. The balloon that Blanchard used to cross La Manchein 1785 was also on display. Soon after meeting in Reims, a memorable exhibit was opened to the public in the Grand Palais. During the exhibit, French biplanes such as Voisin, Henry Farman, the monoplanes, Antoinette, an Bleriot were on display. A large section of the exposition was devoted to types of motors including Gnome, Anzani, and Renault. Captive balloons floating in the halls made a distinct contrast between different models of aerial locomotion. The exposition acquires a huge public response and became an annual feature.

This aviation salon begun by France influenced other countries, giving rise to a multitude of posters on the same subject.
