Description:
The 1910 "Great Aviation Week" in
Rouen, France was a well organized
international competition that
attracted the top pilots of Europe:
Leon Morane and Hubert Latham of
France; Cattaneo of Italy; and
Britain’s Captain Bertram Dickson,
the winner of the meet. Dickson was
an adventurer who travelled around
the world with King George V.,
fought two wars, explored
extensively in Africa, and
successfully settled a border
dispute between Chile and
Argentina. At Rouen, he won the
first prize for duration by staying
aloft for nearly 2 1/2 hours without
landing, and also took first place
for the total distance flown by
logging 747 km. (about 450 miles) on
his Farman machine. Leon Morane,
who placed second at the meeting,
thrilled the crowds by leaving the
flying grounds to circle around the
Rouen Cathedral.
