Description:
This poster, "Fly With The U.S. Marines," depicts a DH-4 liberty plane in flight. The liberty engine was designed by the U.S. air force without a specific airframe size in mind. As it turned out, the engine was too large for the Allies’ airplanes. The U.S. could not sell their newly designed engines to the allies, and the airplane was too heavy to perform as a fighter plane. The liberty plane was consequently fitted for bombing and reconnaissance.
The illustrator, Howard Chandler Christy was born January 10th 1873 in Ohio. As a child Christy had an extraordinary ability to draw. In 1890 Christy moved to New York to attend the Art Students League. There Christy Studied painting and drawing with William Merritt Chase. In 1895 Christy began to sell his illustrations to Scribner’s Weekly and Leslie’s Weekly. Already well known for his illustrations in books and magazines, such as Scribners and Cosmopolitan, Christy became involved in the creation of posters for the war effort. Christy is also known for his illustrations of the ‘Christy girl’. These popular posters mixed eroticism with patriotism to encourage army recruitment and homeland support. Christy’s patriotism is displayed in many of the recruiting posters that he created.
