Description:
London - Cape Town, 9,6000 kms., in
4 days 6 hours by Mrs. Amy Mollison
again with CASTROL
On November 15, 1932 Amy Mollison
took off from the airport at Lympne,
England in her lightweight
DeHavilland airplane. Her aim was
to break the speed record from
London to Cape Town set only eight
months earlier by her husband, Jim
Mollison. She sped south across
France and Spain, over the
Mediterranean Sea to Africa where
she courageously crossed the Sahara
Desert at night and then raced on to
the southern tip of the continent. She got only 5 hours of sleep during
the entire journey, and cut 10 hours
from her husband’s time. "Great
work Amy" Capt. Mollison wired when
she arrived in Cape Town 4 days and
6 hours after she left England.
After a 3 week rest in South Africa
she flew back to England,
establishing a new record for the
return flight as well.
