Description:

This poster is an advertisement for an air show. The clouds at the bottom of the poster provide a space for specific details. The plane in the foreground is a Dewoitin 500 series from the mid to late 1930’s. The plane to the left in an upside-down loop depicts a stunt performed at the show. The early gyroplane and pilot in parachute at the top of the poster showcase the versatility of aircraft present at the show.

The Spanish inventor Juan de la Cierva built the first gyroplane in 1919. The gyroplane, auto giro as it is better known, was a predecessor to the modern helicopter, but unlike the helicopter, the gyroplane was supported in flight by unpowered rotating horizontal wings. a gyroplane has a gas turbine powered propeller that drives the craft forward and provides airspeed to two asymmetrical overhead blades. A conventional propeller provides the forward propulsion of the aircraft. A gyroplane can take off vertically, but unlike a helicopter, it cannot hover. A gyroplane represents a cross between an airplane and a helicopter – it flies more slowly than an airplane but faster than a helicopter.
