Description:
An advertisement for the French railway company Compagnie des Chemins de fer de Paris a
Lyon et a la Mediterranee (usually known more simply as the PLM), showcases the grand sights
waiting to be seen at the Exposition ofNancy, or the exposition Internationale de l'Est de la
France, a momentous exposition in 1909 that not only had air shows but parades and expositions
of electricity. Similar to a World's Fair, spectacular buildings in Art Noveau style were erected
for the event and their silhouettes can be seen against the orange sunset. Note the Palais de
Fetes in the left corner followed by the grand entrance arc. The Porte Monumentale, complete
with tall spires reaching up into the sky to catch the various soaring aircraft.
This particular poster was probably published for the July visit of the Ville de Nancy, the giant
dirigible that made trips during this time to Nancy via Paris and had already delighted thousands
of visitors at other air shows. Other aeronautical machines would also be seen during the six
month exposition are also pictured, such as a Wright Flyer and a hot air balloon. |
