This poster depicts Leon Morance piloting his Bleriot monoplane around the spire of the Rouen Cathedral during one of the most successful early air meets in Rouen in 1910.
The Rouen committee honored Morane with a special prize for this dazzling feat. This was the first instance in which Morane was singled out for acclaim although he possessed a record of uninterrupted successes in St. Petersburg.
During the Rheims meet, Morane flew twenty kilometers in thirteen minutes and eight seconds beating the world’s record for that distance. he also flew five kilometers in three minutes and fourteen seconds, setting a new world record. Morane set a world’s altitude record reaching two kilometers and fifteen meters in his Bleriot monoplane.
The cathedral, also Monet’s favorite subject, is depicted in beautifully-rendered paintings that capture the light at different times of day.
