This clever art deco poster designed
by Edgar Ainsworth advertises
Imperial Airways "Heracles" class
airplane, the Handley Page H.P. 42.
This airplane was used on Imperial’s
European routes for 10 years
beginning in 1931, and when it was
introduced, it set new high
standards for in-flight service and
luxury. On all Heracles class
flights, Imperial served full course
meals and offered an impressive wine
list. The cabin was equipped with
two lavatories, comfortably padded
seats, and because the engines were
located on the wings, the cabin was
much quieter than other airplanes
(but still noisey by today’s
standards). The H.P. 42, along with
many of other planes flown by
Imperial Airways, was much slower
than the competition during an era
when speed was the main attraction
to travelling by air. But by
emphasizing and offering a high
standard of service, safety, and
reliability, Imperial maintained a
reasonable share of the European
passenger market.
