Description:

On July 13, 1924 l’Aero-club d’Alsace had its annual aviation meeting. The aerial demonstration took place on Polygon de Neudorf and lasted 14 hours.

The program for the day was as follows: a display of flying apparel at 2:00, a relay race at 2:30, air acrobatics at 3:00, individual acrobatic contests at 3:30, a demonstration of flying lead by Lieutenant Renauld at 6:00, and parachutists at 6:30. Trams 4 and 7 were responsible for transporting spectators to and from the rally.

The participation of certain well-known aviators helped attract a sufficiently large crowd. Fronval, the world record-holder for 962 loops in one flight, and Mille Paulet and Schaffan who executed their first parachute descent, insured spectators a magnificent display. Also present were the military aviators of the 2nd regiment of Strasbourg as well as top Swiss pilots. Among the officers in the 2nd regiment were Guynemer, Fonck and other military heroes.

Captured, restored, fought over, and died for; Alsace-Lorraine has become a symbol of French patriotism and pride. Aviation was used as an important defense against possible German attack in the first world war and thus Alsace-Lorraine became an appropriate meeting site for the annual aviation events. These rallies served to reiterate French aerial supremacy in a proud territory.
