Description:

This poster shows an artist’s imaginative interpretation of biplanes, monoplanes, dirigibles, and early one-manned aircraft flying over Monaco. The illustrations of biplanes were modeled after the Wright type A planes. The gliders were fashioned after the Otto Lilienthal hang-glider.

The inventor of the glider, Otto Lilienthal, a German aeronautics engineer, was born in Anklan, Prussia in 1848. In 1889 Lilienthal published an important book on the flight of birds. This book, considered the basis for aviation influenced the Wright brothers. Lilienthal’s glider utilized principles of bird flight found in his book. From an elevated mountain Lilienthal made over 2000 flights of 300 meters in his glider until his unfortunate death in Germany on August 10, 1896. Lilienthal was mid-flight was when the wings of his glider broke apart fatally wounding him.

In this poster all modes of air transport available in 1911 have been depicted. The artist has not chosen to represent the aircraft with technical accuracy and has instead improvised. For example, the biplane and monoplanes have propellers on the rear instead of the front.
