Description:
An international contest of scientific and military kites took place August 18-25, 1912. The contest was held under the patronage of l’Aero Club de Belge and the Federation Aeronautique Internationale.
Three different monetary awards were given. A prize of 300 francs went to the best kite basket. A prize of 800 francs went to superlative kite assembly. A prize of 400 francs went to special baskets and carpets for kites.
Scientific and military kites were used for observation purposes. From high in the air it was possible to determine weather conditions and discern military formations. Military kites helped the army obtain necessary information on the enemy’s whereabouts, subsequent movement, number of men, and supplies. Spying was integral to the army and remains a fundamental principle in the art of war.
