Description:
THE TOUR OF BELGIUM by Airplane,
August 6-15, 1911. Organized by the
Aero Club of Belgium under the high
patronage of His Majesty the King.
Eighteen of the best French and
Belgian pilots registered for the
"Tour of Belgium," a circuit race
around the country that began in
Brussels. On August 6, 1911, eleven
aviators were ready to start, but
only four men actually got into the
air, successfully beginning the
contest. The competitors were
required to fly above certain
points, circle around various
landmarks (church steeples were very
popular) and land in designated
cities and towns along the route.
The race lasted longer than expected
due to the bad weather, but finally
Jules Tyck flew into Brussels and
won the first prize. Tyck was the
only flyer to finish who satisfied
every requirement without missing a
single stop
