The "Grande Quinzaine D’Aviation"
was a two week international
competition held in Le Havre,
Trouville, and Deauville, France,
three cities along the Bay of the
Seine (where the Seine meets the
English Channel). The world’s
record in altitude was broken twice
during this meet by the famous
French aviator Leon Morane. In Le
Havre, on August 29. 1910 he flew to
a height of 7,166 feet in a Bleriot
monoplane to break the record
recently set by Hubert Latham in
Reims at the beginning of the
month. When the altitude
competition was held again in
Deauville on September 3, Morane
beat his own record, soaring to a
height of 8,469 feet. Another major
event at this meeting was "The
Crossing of the Bay of the Seine," a
three day contest in which pilots
raced across the Bay from Le Havre
to Deauville and back. The results
were based on the total crossings as
well as time; Latham won the first
prize of 10,000 francs plus a trophy
for a total of 16 crossings in his
Antoinette monoplane. The poster
depicts this event showing an
Antoinette in flight over the Bay of
the Seine.
